West Ham United has been defeated by Wigan Athletic in a Capital one Cup match played at Boleyn Ground on Tuesday. Wigan won the match by a big margin of 4-1. With this win, Wigan has reached the fourth round of the tournament.
Mauro Boselli was the hero of Wigan’s victory. The Argentinean scored two goals and helped his team to secure an easy win. However, Wigan didn’t have a good start to the match and got trailed by 1-0 in the 7th minute.
McArthur passed the ball to Modibo Maiga and the Malian striker beat Ali Al-Habsi, the goalkeeper of Wigan, with an extremely powerful strike to take West Ham ahead by 1-0. But, West Ham’s lead didn’t last long and the leveller was scored by Wigan just after 7 minutes. It was the first goal of Mauro Boselli in the match. Figueroa set up the goal beautifully and Boselli was quick to smash the ball home from a distance of six yards.
West Ham got down by 2-1 in the 38th minute due to a terrific goal by the Wigan defender Ivan Ramis. It was a brilliant effort by the Spaniard. He got the ball near the halfway line and he made his way through the midfield after getting rid of three West Ham players. His powerful drive from a distance of 25 yards was enough to beat the West Ham goal keeper.
Just after three minutes, Boselli made the score 3-1 with his second goal in the match. West Ham players badly needed some goals in the second half, but, the defense of Wigan proved to be too good for them. Jordi Gomez wrapped up the match with a penalty goal in the 84th minute.
West Ham United will play its next match against the Queens Park Rangers on 1st of October at the Loftus Road Stadium.
